ROBERT
S. LEISEROWITZ
Born: July 7, 1927 Des Moines,
Iowa
ROBERT
LEISEROWITZ, age 80, has been a serious photographer and artist
for over 50 years.
During
his many years in Des Moines, Iowa, where he lived until 1984,
he pioneered
Photography as an art form and has gained an international reputation
as a master
printer of black & white photography.
Robert
works only in black & white. Over many years of experimenting
with chemistry, he created a variety of chemical developer formulas
which are mixed just prior to the printing process while the
developer is fresh and at the peak of strength. He matches his
developer to the subject, allowing more or less contrast and
expanding the tonal range
of the print, especially in the shadow areas.
He
is a purist, and perfectionist, using only natural light and
shadow. Anything else is destroyed and begun again, even re-photographing
and processing again.
Rich
black tones are dominant in much of his later work, as soft,
warm tone paper and developers were essential in his midwestern
series in the 70's and 80's.
Sensual
qualities are more emphasized in his later abstract prints of
monsoon clouds, cactus, plants and flowers and the pasta series.
In
1978, Robert opened the original Leiserowitz Gallery in West
Des Moines, Iowa, The first gallery of fine art photography in
the Midwest.
The
gallery was extremely popular. He brought many of the world's
most famous Photographs by Steiglitz, Ansel Adams, Edward, Brett
& Cole Weston, Karsh, Strand, Cunningham and many others.
The
gallery was open for 6 years, until 1984.
In
1984, Robert moved to Arizona to devote more time to the further
development of his own work and style. The abundant sunshine
and contrasting landscapes were inspiring.
In
the following years he began to gravitate toward abstract forms,
especially his cloud and plants and flower series. The contrasting
light and shadows became important elements.
Leiserowitz
prints are held in many collections, both corporate and personal.
He
created his own website in 1994: Leiserowitz Gallery of Black
&
White Photography. It is visited by thousands of viewers throughout
the world. |
